First Firefly--Really!

I know, I know... In my last post, I said that I wasn't going to make my blog phenological. But, I just have to report that, last evening, at 9:30, I spotted the first firefly of the year near the top of a large tree near my house. It's very, very early!

That's incredibly early. Who woulda thunk?

BTW, I don't see how you can write about nature and natural matters and not be phenological—since it covers, not only the first appearance of such things as a particular bird or wildflower, and their correspondence with climate or another species, but also seasonal nature in general and its relationships. Spring ephemerals in their entirety are a phenological division. In this way, it is practically all phenological. And personally speaking, I like the specific tie-ins and the broader stroks…plus I enjoy the folklore and old proverbs that go with them, as they're mostly right on.

Not trying to tell you how to write, for sure; just hoping you write about whatever trips your trigger at a given moment…and I thus have something go interesting and well-written and fun to read!
