I heard the first of this summer's cicadas on Wednesday evening, June 30, during a walk in my favorite natural area. Summer's finally here in my part of the the Mid-Atlantic (as if the infernal weather wasn't enough of a clue).

Haven't hear a cicada yet, but I've been listening and expecting their ratcheting any day. Last year I heard the first one July 1st; the year before that, June 28th. Gotta be soon!
Given how warm it's been here, I'm surprised that I haven't heard one earlier. Over the weekend, I heard two more, so I'm up to three now--I can still count them, before the din of countless others begins. Hot, and extraordinarily dry here; the soil's dust, and I have to water my tomatoes and roses daily.
